While The Princess Diaries 3 might be in the works at Disney, don’t expect to see Julie Andrews in the threequel. Recently, it was reported that a third installment of the Princess Diaries series was in active development, with Aadrita Mukerji (Supergirl, Reacher) writing the screenplay. While no deals had yet been made with Anne Hathaway to return, it was reported that the goal was to get her involved in reprising her role as Queen Mia. But what of the previous ruler, Andrews’ Clarisse Renaldi?
Apparently, too much time has passed for Andrews to feel good about a potential return for a third movie. In a new interview with Access Hollywood, Andrews addressed the recent reports about The Princess Diaries 3. She was asked if a return could be in the cards, but she doesn’t feel like there’d be a good reason for her to come back now that she’s so much older. Andrews notes that there had been talk about a threequel soon after the second film was released in 2004, but that time has come and gone.

Before the sequel news was broken, Andrews had previously spoken with THR about the possibility of a return. Calling the notion a “lovely thought,” Andrews more clearly stated that too much time has passed that she’s just not really interested in doing anything else with that character. From that June interview:
“I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible. It was talked about very shortly after [the second sequel] came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run.”
“I think it would be too late to do it now. There was talk of a sequel many, many years ago. But I don’t think it ever came to pass. And Garry then did leave us. [Marshall died in 2016.] [For] especially me, it’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible.”
The Princess Diaries 3: Will Mia Return?
Julie Andrews seems pretty clear that she’s not interested in coming back for The Princess Diaries 3. Of course, minds can always change, but fans probably shouldn’t expect to see former queen Mia appear. The good news for those hoping to see Anne Hathaway return is that she has been more open about it when asked about the possibility in interviews. However, she was hoping to get Andrews involved if that was going to happen. As she told Entertainment Tonight back in October:
The Princess Diaries 3 has yet to receive a premiere date.
“I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it. If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”
