Bryce Dallas Howard’s weight was a topic of conversation for studio executives while filming Jurassic World. Since 2015, Howard has played Claire Dearing in the Jurassic Park trilogy reboot. In an interview with Metro, Howard disclosed how there were talks about asking her to lose weight for the final film, but director Colin Trevorrow quickly came to her defense:

Howard goes on to praise her body’s ability to perform the film’s required stunts, saying that she was at “her maximum strength.”

“What being in this third film allowed, how do I say this, how do I say this, how do I say this…[I’ve] been asked to not use my natural body in cinema. On the third movie, it was actually because there were so many women cast, it was something that Colin felt very strongly about in terms of protecting me…because the conversation came up again, ‘We need to ask Bryce to lose weight.’ [Colin] was like, ‘There are lots of different kinds of women on this planet and there are lots of different kinds of women in our film.'"

DeWanda Wise, who portrays Kayla Watts in the trilogy’s final installment, also shared that there was resistance towards her character being muscular before adding: “It’s just every side, it’s relentless and impossible."

Bryce Dallas Howard Talks Unequal Pay

This is not the first time that the reboot has made headlines for behind-the-scenes occurrences. In 2018, a report with salary information for the film’s stars surfaced, stating that Howard was making $8 million for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom while co-star Chris Pratt was making $10 million. The actress refuted that report, telling Insider that she was earning “so much less.”

During that time, she did credit Pratt for pushing for the two to earn the same amount and handling negotiations so that both would receive equal pay for other franchise opportunities, including video games and rides.

Howard’s big break came in 2004 when starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village after the director watched her perform in an on-stage production of As You Like It. In 2006, she collaborated with the director again for Lady in the Water. Her other film credits include As You Like It, Spider-Man 3, Terminator Salvation, 50/50, and The Help. She received a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of Rosalind in As You Like It.

Following in her father Ron Howard’s footsteps, she has also stepped behind the camera to direct the documentary Dads, and episodes The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.

Up next, Howard will appear in Apple TV+’s Argylle, opposite Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, John Cena, Catherine O’Hara, Ariana DeBose, and Samuel L. Jackson.
