We are already almost halfway through the year, and the next few months are about to bring a number of big and highly anticipated movies to cinemas that are going to all battle it out to have the highest gross and opening weekend of 2022. With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness having taken The Batman’s crown, it is now over to next month’s Jurassic World Dominion to try and push higher on its release, and according to those who know it could well dethrone Marvel’s sorcerer with a huge amount of interest in the conclusion of the Jurassic World trilogy.
While Doctor Strange 2 had the pull of the Marvel multiverse to draw in audiences, Jurassic World: Dominion has not only the previous Jurassic World movies, but also the return of original Jurassic Park stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum to give it a nostalgic legacy sequel angle as well. Because of that, Box Office Pro are predicting an opening weekend of up to $205 million for the movie, which will compete against Multiverse of Madness’ $187 million across its first three days.

Of course, Jurassic World unexpectedly became one of the highest-grossing movies of all time when it hit cinemas in 2015 and began a whole new chapter in the dinosaur franchise. Jurassic World ended up opening to a $208 million haul, but despite being highly anticipated, the follow-up, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom only managed $147 million, although like its predecessor it did go on to pass the $1billion mark with ease. With Jurassic World Dominion being promoted as the movie that connects the two Jurassic franchises and act as a kind of final act, for now, the movie has the potential to be one of the few movies genuinely able to take on Marvel in the year’s box office chart.
Jurassic World Dominion Could Easily Become The Biggest Movie of The Franchise

Even if Jurassic World Dominion comes in at the lower end of its weekend prediction, which sits around $165 million, it will still beat Fallen Kingdom, however, following the pandemic, there have been some very conservative estimates made on box office numbers with the likes of The Batman and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness easily meeting and passing their early expectations. Whether this means that Dominion will manage to breach its higher boundary is something that we will see in a few weeks, but it is certainly possible that the film could become the biggest earner of the Jurassic World franchise by the time it ends its theatrical run.
The biggest draw of Jurassic World Dominion is obviously the return of its legacy stars in more than just a short cameo role. While Ghostbusters: Afterlife saw its original cast members reprising their roles, their appearance on screen amounted to around 15 minutes in total, and a number of movies that have brought back cast members have gone down that same cameo route. However, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom already tried that with Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcom in a very small bookend role that left a lot of fans disappointed. It has been made very clear that there will be no such disappointment from Jurassic World Dominion.
