Three weeks ago, production was halted on the FX drama Justified: City Primeval after two cars, whose occupants were engaged in gunfire, broke through the show’s barricades. Fortunately, no one was injured as the cast and crew hit the ground and took cover during the shooting and shell casings were later found on the set. Unfortunately, another act of violence has occurred near the perimeter of the set. On Monday night, someone threw an incendiary device on set while production was underway in the 1000-block of South Desplaines Street in Chicago. Chicago police report that someone lit and threw an incendiary device toward the set. The device did not explode, no one was hurt, and no arrest has been made yet.

“I think it was a pretty traumatic experience for the cast and crew to be anywhere near that kind of gunfire. A lot was done to take a break and make sure everyone was OK, and we [increased] security.”

As a result of last month’s incident, Sony beefed up security by hiring a team trained in high-threat situations. An experienced hostage negotiator who provides security detail globally traveled to Chicago to provide protection. His team includes former members of the Navy SEALs and Army Rangers. The ex-military team will work alongside the production’s security and the Chicago Police Department to ensure the safety of locals ahead of filming. As an extra cautionary measure, shuttles were made available for local crew members who didn’t feel comfortable driving onto set, in addition to preexisting transportation accommodations for workers who had traveled from Los Angeles.

The eight-episode limited series Justified: City Primeval is a spinoff of FX’s hit, eight-time Emmy nominated series Justified, which ran from 2010 to 2015 and is inspired by the Elmore Leonard crime novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit. The spinoff takes place seven years following the end of Justified and follows Givens (Timothy Olyphant) after he left Kentucky for his new home base in Miami. Viewers will find Givens balancing life as a marshal after leaving Kentucky to live in Miami and be a part-time father of 14-year-old Willa, starring Olyphant’s real-life daughter Vivian.

In addition to Timothy Olyphant and his daughter, Vivian, Justified: City Primeval will also star Boyd Holbrook, Aunjanue Ellis, Norbert Leo Butz, Victor Williams, Adelaide Clemens, and Vondie Curtis Hall.
