Given that his life has seen just as much drama as success, it seems inevitable that there will one day be a Kanye West biopic. The bigger question that we have for when that moment arrives is who will be playing the controversial mogul. In a recent post on Instagram, which has since been deleted but not before getting covered by the press, Ye asked his followers who they’d want to see play him in a movie based on his life. He also offered his own pick in Django Unchained star Jamie Foxx.

“My pick is Jamie Foxx,” Ye stated. “One of the greatest genius[es].”

It’s easy to see why Ye would want Foxx to play him in a film, given the actor’s success with biopics. For his acclaimed performance as late music legend Ray Charles, Foxx won the Best Actor Oscar for Ray in 2005. Other celebrities have also taken to Foxx as a great pick to play them in a movie, as the actor and Mike Tyson are working on a limited series about the retired boxer. Ye and Foxx also know each other quite well, with their collaborations on Foxx and Twista’s “Slow Jamz” and Foxx’s “Extravaganza” as well as Ye’s “Gold Digger.”

Jamie Foxx Wasn’t Kanye’s First Choice, According to Danny McBride

Earlier this year, Danny McBride turned some heads when he made the claim that Ye had pitched a Kanye West biopic to him personally. According to McBride, via THR, Ye was deadset at that time on having McBride play him in the potential film. The actor said that these talks went so far as to have Ye actually pay a visit to McBride’s home to discuss the possibility. Ye seems to have since moved on from that idea if he’s now picking Jamie Foxx, but for McBride, he still cherishes the “awesome” experience.

“One time, I did get a phone call from Kanye West, and, this is real, he came to my house in South Carolina and wanted me to play him in a movie,” McBride said. “He flew down to South Carolina, and I took him out in a boat for the day, and he said that he wanted… me to do a movie of his life, and he wanted me to play him… It was one of the most incredible days ever; it was pretty awesome.”

We will see if the Ye movie ever happens, but as of now, there’s nothing official that’s in the works. Meanwhile, Ye’s upbringing and early career were explored to an extent with the Netflix docuseries jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, which premiered this year and is now streaming.
