Cobra Kai may be coming to an end, but that’s far from the end of the road for the Karate Kid franchise, which wants to continue exploring classic characters and new ones with stories we have yet to see.

Released in 2018 on YouTube Red, Cobra Kai was magnificently received by fans of the film saga, who found much more in the return of Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence than they could have ever imagined. After being canceled and bought by Netflix to air its third season, the series reached a much larger audience, becoming a phenomenon just like the original movies.

With six seasons, Cobra Kai will come to an end this year on the streaming platform. Still, it will only be the beginning of new chapters within the great franchise that the Karate Kid has become, which is already working on a new movie with Ralph Macchio set to star again. And although it initially seemed that there would be no connection between the film and the hit series, it is not all lost.

The Future of Karate Kid and Cobra Kai

In an interview with Deadline, Sony Pictures TV Studios president Katherine Pope spoke about what’s to come for the franchise after the series finale:

Cobra Kai has introduced several new characters that are already part of the Karate Kid legacy, so the possibilities for new stories are endless. Even continuing to tell the lives of Daniel or Johnny could be successful, considering the attachment that fans of the franchise have towards these two characters.

“They have some ideas in terms of expanding Cobra Kai and coming at the Karate Kid legacy in different ways. But yes, the movie is a good example too. It’s all of these. I think we’ve all learned these worlds can exist together and they can feel cohesive and they can feel additive, especially for the fans, and feel like big, big worlds that exist on lots of different levels, they don’t necessarily all exist in the same plane. Audiences are so savvy now and accepting multiple levels of the IP so the Cobra Kai universe lives on, that’s for sure.”

Additionally, Macchio commented on several occasions about his desire to work on a prequel focused on Miyagi, the iconic character of Pat Morita, something that undoubtedly has not been ruled out by Sony to give the saga a new angle.
