Whatever Sony has planned for the next Karate Kid movie, it won’t be connected to Cobra Kai. This week, it was announced that a new Karate Kid film had been added to Sony’s release calendar for 2024. No other details about the film were revealed, leaving it up to speculation as to whether it will be a new take on the original story or if it will be set in the Cobra Kai universe.
It’s now looking like this won’t be directly related to Cobra Kai. Taking to Twitter, Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz seems to be trying to clear up some of the questions by noting that the Cobra Kai team is not currently involved with the mystery project. Hurwitz also seems to know just as much as the rest of us about the Karate Kid film but has offered his support for those involved. His tweet reads:
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
It’s worth noting that Hurwitz says that the film does not focus specifically on Cobra Kai characters. That seems to leave the door open that the movie could still be set in that same world, which also included the original Karate Kid trilogy along with The Next Karate Kid. But it’s just as possible that the film could simply present a new take on the story, perhaps with the hope of launching a new movie series with a fresh Karate Kid plot that’s unconnected to the previous movies and the show.
Will The Karate Kid Get Rebooted Again?
There has been one remake of The Karate Kid to be released in theaters already. In 2010, Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan starred in a new take on The Karate Kid from director Harald Zwart and writer Christopher Murphey. The film was successful at the box office, though reviews were pretty mixed. There was a sequel announced for 2010’s The Karate Kid shortly after that film was released, but that movie never materialized.
You can watch all five seasons of Cobra Kai on Netflix.
