Karen Gillan recently took to Twitter to provide fans with a first look at her upcoming sci-fi movie, Dual. Gillan will have a double role in the movie and will battle her clone in a duel to the death. Dual is written and directed by Riley Stearns (The Art of Self-Defense, Faults) and also stars Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul in the lead. The rest of the cast includes Martha Kelly (Baskets), Beulah Koale (Hawaii Five-0), and Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network).

Karen Gillan tweeted the photo, writing, “Very excited to share this cheeky first look at Dual. Very proud of this film in which I prepare to fight myself in a duel to the death.” The picture shows Sara (Karen Gillan) standing with a butterfly sword in hand and staring down Aaron Paul’s character. A dummy with a mirror attached to its head is placed behind them, reflecting Sara’s fierceness. This won’t be the first time Gillan plays two versions of herself. She had double roles in Avengers: Endgame and Doctor Who as well.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Dual is a satirical sci-fi film set in the near future and sees Karen Gillan battle her clone in a legal death match, or a “duel.” Props to whoever came up with the title. Hopefully, Dual will be more than just clever wordplay and an intriguing premise. Speaking of premise, there are several well-known films and TV shows that deal with the human vs clone/doppelganger subject, like Will Smith’s Gemini Man and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The 6th Day. The upcoming Apple TV+ original Swan Song starring Mahershala Ali, also has a similar concept to Dual but without the violence.

How Dual distinguishes itself from the similar movies that came before it remains to be seen. But we can leave it to the wicked mind of director Riley Stearns. Stearns has a penchant for blending dark comedy with violent and mind-boggling twists, and we have no reason to doubt Dual will be any different. The synopsis of Dual reads as follows:

In the society of the future, humans and clones cannot exist simultaneously after a certain period of time, and so the two fight till only one remains. As previously stated, Dual is a satirical movie. So all these weird legalities and rules of the society in which Dual takes place will be explained when the film releases - possibly in early 2022. There is currently no word on the release date for Dual or in which format it will be available – streaming or theatrical.

“A terminally ill woman opts for a cloning procedure to ease her loss on her friends and family. When she makes a miraculous recovery, her attempts to have her clone decommissioned fail and lead to a court-mandated duel to the death.”

Dual wrapped filming last October, but it has been radio silence since then. Even the character names and descriptions haven’t been announced yet. Fortunately, the marketing campaign for Dual has begun now, and it won’t be long before more information comes out. Till then, stay tuned.
