Although he’s limited to one movie, Karl Urban was eager to sign on for the opportunity to be in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. The actor joined Thor: Ragnarok in 2017 and played a fan-favorite character with Skurge. Although not a star in the movie, we see the character receive a full-fledged arc ending with his triumphant death holding two assault rifles defending his home of Asgard.

The actor recently sat down with GQ, discussing his most iconic characters and their meaning. He mentions Skurge and reveals he didn’t ’need to read anything’ when director Taika Waititi gave him the call. He heard about his co-stars and his character and was immediately ready to join the cast.

Thor: Ragnarok was a critical and financial success, reaching an astronomical $853 million at the box office against a $180 million budget and a 93% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was helmed by Taika Waititi, with Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, and Tessa Thompson joining the cast. The follow-up to Ragnarok was just released, titled Thor: Love and Thunder, which sees Chris Hemsworth alongside his co-star Natalie Portman.

“I really just got a call from Taika out of the blue saying, ‘hey, do you wanna come and play? I’ve got this cool role of Skurge. You’d be working with Cate Blanchett.’ I’m like, sign me up. I don’t need to read anything. It was fantastic. I remember turning up to work one day on set and there’s Sam Neil, Anthony Hopkins, and just sitting around. And that, to me, was one of my favorite days. When you’re sitting around with Tony Hopkins and Sam Neil shooting the s**t. Sam Neil was probably one of the actors that had really inspired me to be an actor. Coming from New Zealand, getting into an international career. And same with Anthony Hopkins.’

Karl Urban Has Seen a Long and Successful Career

     New Line Cinema

Karl Urban has been a part of several blockbusters throughout his illustrious career, including his role as Eomer in The Lord of the Rings franchise, Bones in Star Trek, Judge Dredd in Dredd, and his current part as Billy Butcher in Prime Video’s The Boys. Recently, fans have cast Urban as Wolverine if the MCU ever adapts the character, however, this could be a problem with his appearance in Thor: Ragnarok as Skurge.

Playing two different characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be possible, especially with the introduction of the multiverse, the premise of the current saga within the superhero-filled world. So will we see Urban as Skurge within one universe and Wolverine in another? We likely won’t find out for a while as the character’s introduction is still a ways off; however, Urban may be the perfect talent for the role.
