Karl Urban may currently be best known as Billy Butcher in Prime Video’s ultra-violent comic book series The Boys, but 20 years ago his career really took flight after he played Eomer in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Of course, the Twitter account of his current franchise couldn’t help to take a moment to celebrate the anniversary in its own way – by poking fun at it. In a new post, The Boys account shared side-by-side comparisons between Urban’s two alter-egos, labelling his Eomer role as “Karl Rural” in the process.
Since playing Eomer in both The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Urban has gone on to star in a number of prominent roles including as Dr. McCoy in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movies, and as Judge Dredd in the 2012 version of the 2000A.D. comic franchise. However, the actor’s peak has certainly come thanks to The Boys, and with a fourth season of the popular series currently filming, that seems set to continue for some time to come.

Despite his current success with The Boys, there is another comic book franchise that some fans would like to see him become a part of, with some touting him as one of the potential stars who could take on the role of Wolverine in the MCU. Although it seems unlikely that Urban would end up taking over the iconic role that will be played on more time by Hugh Jackman in Deadpool 3, fans can always dream, can’t they?
The World of The Boys Is Expanding In New Ways
The Boys will be returning for its fourth season next year, with Urban being once again joined by the likes of Antony Starr, Jensen Ackles, Jack Quaid, Tomer Capone, and Karen Fukuhara, while Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Rob Benedict and Rosemarie DeWitt have been confirmed to be joining the show. However in addition to the main series, and a second season of animated spin-off The Boys Presents Diabolical, the brand new spin-off show Gen V will also be making its debut in 2023.
Set in a special university for budding superheroes learning how to use their superhuman abilities, Gen V introduces an all-new cast of characters, but will have some familiar faces dropping in on the action. Reprising their roles from The Boys in the spin-off are Jessie T. Usher, Colby Minifie, and P.J. Byrne, respectively, as A-Train, Ashley Barrett, and Adam Bourke. In addition, Clancy Brown joins the franchise with a role in Gen V, as seen in the new trailer with other new cast members Alexander Calvert and Jason Ritter.
Currently it is not known exactly when Gen V or The Boys season 4 will arrive on Prime Video, but both can be expected sometime later in 2023. With crossovers between the two branches of the franchise being teased by show creator Eric Kripke, there is plenty to look forward to for fans of The Boys in the coming years.
