Romantic comedies have slowed down in recent years after an explosive era of hits throughout the 2000s and early 2010s. According to IndieWire, Actress Kate Hudson claimed in a recent YouTube show that a lack of a good story in recent rom-coms is responsible for the hybrid genre of movies falling out of favor:

The ‘meet cute’ refers to the trope in rom-coms where the couple meets each other in awkward or unusual circumstances. This happens in the beginning and is often teased in trailers for the movie. While it’s a crucial segment of rom-coms, Hudson claims that more parts are needed to make the viewer ‘feel fuzzy’ throughout the film.

“[Romantic comedies need] an actually good story, let’s start with that… I think sometimes people think rom-coms are all about the ‘meet cute.’ A great rom-com is about meeting love, discovering love, falling in love, love falling apart, and then how you come back together. That’s a very traditional rom-com structure.”

Hudson also teased she could be teaching rom-coms in the future:

“The ones that we love are with two movie stars in a love story. They’re shiny and they’re bright and it’s like wish fulfillment. It’s supposed to make you feel fuzzy, and then they stay with you forever. They’re the most classic.”

“I feel like I’m really winning at this description of a rom-com! That’s the class I’m going to be [teaching] at NYU film school when I’m 75. I’ll be the professor of rom-coms.”

Kate Hudson Loves Working With Matthew McConaughey

According to Kate Hudson, the story isn’t the only ingredient in a good romantic comedy, but also chemistry, which is something she had with Matthew McConaughey:

Kate Hudson acted opposite Matthew McConaughey in two classic rom-coms: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Fool’s Gold, the latter of which was also an action-adventure film.

“But just because they’re supposed to feel bright doesn’t mean they need to look so bright. A lot of times, again, I think the genre gets kind of dumbed down because they think they know. And then the chemistry… so I’m grateful that it was me and Matthew [McConaughey] because he’s a blast.”

Kate Hudson isn’t just a rom-com actress, though. She’s appeared in several different film genres, including The Skeleton Key, an eerie horror in the Louisiana bayou, the political thriller The Reluctant Fundamentalist, and the crime drama The Killer Inside Me. Most recently, she appeared in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and as the title suggests, it’s a mystery film, adding to the variety of Hudson’s impressive filmography.

Her next film is Shriver, a comedy written and directed by Michael Maren. Along with Kate Hudson, the cast includes Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. A release date for the film has yet to be announced.
