Kate Hudson has had a very impressive career thus far. The Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award-winning actress has been acting professionally for around two and a half decades, and in that time has been in dozens of films and TV shows. Perhaps first known for her famous mom, actress Goldie Hawn, as well as stepdad Kurt Russell, Hudson had her breakout role in the 70s-based rock and roll film Almost Famous, where she played Penny Lane, a young but wise groupie following the fictional rock band Stillwater on tour. While Hudson’s taken on acting roles of all types, she’s often most affiliated with the romantic comedies she starred in during the 2000s. For a little while, this nearly typecast Hudson’s acting career. However, Hudson has also starred in multiple dramas and thrillers since.

While Hudson has had high-profile romantic relationships in her personal life with Black Crowes lead singer Chris Robinson, Muse lead singer and guitarist Matt Bellamy, and actor Owen Wilson, it’s often her romantic comedy roles that have garnered her the most attention. Hudson’s been in on-screen movie relationships with the likes of Hollywood stars Matthew McConaughey, Matt Dillon, and Luke Wilson, among others. While Hudson took a break from acting in recent years, in all reality, it wasn’t much of one. She currently has various projects in the works, including a role in the upcoming Knives Out 2, which she won over Kaley Cuoco. For many fans, no matter what direction Hudson’s career may go in the future, there will always likely be a soft spot for the rom-com roles Hudson has made her own. Here are Kate Hudson’s best rom-com movies, ranked:

6 Fool’s Gold

     De Line Pictures

The enjoyable treasure hunt rom-com adventure movie Fool’s Gold stars Matthew McConaughey alongside Kate Hudson. McConaughey plays Finn, a husband who becomes obsessed with finding the Spanish Aurelia treasure. Unfortunately, this obsession leads to relationship issues with, and eventual divorce from, his wife Tess (Hudson) because he’s never around. Despite this, upon finding a clue that may lead him to the treasure, he convinces his now ex-wife Tess to come along for the search. However, they are not alone. Gangster rapper Bigg Bunny along with Finn’s previous mentor Moe Fitch are also aware of the loot and plan to get the treasure for themselves. In order to do this, Bigg Bunny kidnaps Tess and forces her to lead him to the money. Finn then must go on a rescue mission for Tess (during which Tess later ends up saving him) and a battle ensues to be the ones to ultimately come up successful, bringing the former couple back together again. This was the second rom-com film the duo did together, and while it proved successful financially and with many fans, critically the movie was scrutinized. Still, the chemistry between McConaughey and Hudson is undeniable.

5 My Best Friend’s Girl

     Lionsgate

In My Best Friend’s Girl, Dustin (Jason Biggs) is dating his co-worker Alexis (Kate Hudson), but he always tries too hard when he’s around her, which lowers her interest in him and she breaks up with him. In an attempt to convince her she made a mistake; Dustin devises a plan to have his friend Tank (Dane Cook) go on a date with her and be the worst date he can possibly be so that Alexis will realize she should go back to dating Dustin again. Tank goes along with it and as he’s trying to sabotage the date, his shock tactics actually attract Alexis to him more and the two actually start liking one other. Tank has a conversation with his father, however, who’s a womanizer of sorts, and this leads to Tank breaking things off with Alexis, in another attempt to push her back into Dustin’s arms. However, feeling betrayed by his friend, Dustin doesn’t know Tank is trying to end things with Alexis and instead spills the whole ridiculous plan to Alexis to get her to break things off with Tank. However, this repels her even more and ultimately leads her back to Tank instead. The film is entertaining and fans of Kate Hudson should have a great time watching it.

4 Dr. T and The Women

     20th Century Studios

Dr. T and The Women revolves around Dr. Sullivan Travis aka Dr. T (Richard Gere), a confident and loving gynecologist who is constantly surrounded by many women in his life. Things have typically gone extremely well for him as he is well off financially and has a beautiful wife and two daughters. His life takes a turn, however, when a string of difficult events begin to test him and his faith. His wife begins a mental decline and no longer recognizes him as her husband. His oldest daughter Dee Dee (Kate Hudson) is a student in college and a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader alternate who is about to get married to a man she doesn’t truly love. Instead, she’s secretly romantically involved with Marilyn (Liv Tyler) her close friend and maid of honor at her wedding. Thankfully, Dee Dee doesn’t go through with her wedding to a man she doesn’t to be with and instead kisses Marilyn. Dr. T also goes through a severe car accident, but survives, only to be asked to deliver a baby – a boy. There is an excellent ensemble cast in this film, including Helen Hunt, Farrah Fawcett, Tara Reid, Laura Dern, Shelley Long, and more.

3 About Adam

     BBC Films

The romantic comedy About Adam follows Adam, a young man from Dublin, Ireland that gets entangled in charming nearly every member of the Owens family. While Adam shows initial interest in Lucy (Kate Hudson), he soon ends up involved with her two sisters Laura and Alice. Even their straight brother David nearly falls for Adam, before realizing that would be a mistake. While some movies with a plot like this would likely be full of jealousy and revenge between the sisters, here, Adam isn’t portrayed as an opportunist. Instead, he’s considerably more likable, despite his actions. This small film is one that many fans may overlook in the Kate Hudson catalog and it’s worth checking out.

2 Bride Wars

From the time they were kids, there’s one thing best friends Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) have dreamed about: having their perfect wedding day at the Plaza Hotel in New York in June. As you may suspect by a title like Bride Wars, trouble ensues when a clerical error results in the two having their separate weddings booked on the exact same day there, with no other June dates available. Liv, the dominant friend of the two starts to clash with Emma even more as Emma begins to assert herself instead of just going along with Liv’s demands. Emma’s fiancé Fletcher (Chris Pratt) also notices the changes in Emma and makes it clear he doesn’t like it. As the resentment builds between the ladies, they both start trying to sabotage the other’s wedding in increasingly maniacal ways. The former best friends quickly become rivals. As the weddings begin, the pranks continue and this results in Emma and Fletcher breaking up, as it’s clear they no longer are compatible. Liv’s wedding goes ahead with Emma as her maid of honor. However, at the wedding, Emma hits it off with Liv’s brother Nate. It’s later revealed Emma and Nate got married and both Emma and Liv are pregnant with the exact same expected due date, clearly setting up a potential comedy sequel. Although the sequel never happened, you just know their rivalry would continue right up to them giving birth. Bride Wars was a box office hit and an excellent showcase for the film’s two main actresses.

1 How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days

     Paramount

How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days is the ultimate Kate Hudson rom-com movie. Hudson plays Andie Anderson, an advice columnist who is working on an article about how to make a man leave you within 10 days. As part of the research for her article, she meets business executive Ben (Matthew McConaughey, who almost didn’t get the role). Unbeknownst to her, Ben has a plan of his own: see if he can make a woman fall in love with him in 10 days. This leads to Andie doing everything to get Ben to want to get away from her while Ben is doing everything he can to make her like him more. Despite all the chaos the two inflict on each other, the two fall for one another in the process. However, when each one learns about how the other was manipulating them, they separate. As Andie regrets her actions, she leaves her job writing “How To” articles in order to look for something new. However, Ben finds her and the two forgive one another. This rom-com has lots of hilarious situations, great actors, a good story, and leaves you feeling good by the end. The movie defied all box office expectations as well and without this film, Kate Hudson may not have even been offered some of the romantic comedy roles on this list.
