Over the last few years, Kate Siegel has quietly made a name for herself within the horror and thriller genre. She has starred in a handful of popular horror TV shows on Netflix, including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass. Even among the larger cast in each miniseries, Siegel’s performances stood out.

Horror thriller fans have undoubtedly heard of director Mike Flanagan or have seen some of his productions — including the three Netflix miniseries that were just mentioned. That’s right, Siegel and Flanagan have teamed up a number of times throughout the years. The pair, who are actually husband and wife in real life, got together after filming Oculus, which is one of Siegel’s first well-known horror films. Together, the duo has given us movies like Oculus, Gerald’s Game, based on the Stephen King novel, and Hush, a movie with little to no dialogue.

Fans are excited to know the duo is working on their next project, another new TV miniseries for Netflix, The Fall of the House of Usher, which is set to drop later this year, per Netflix Life. Siegel will also star in the remake of The Time Traveler’s Wife, which has been adapted by HBO as a TV series. While we wait for these new shows, let’s take a look back at some of Kate Siegel’s best performances, ranked.

Siegel’s part is smaller compared to her starring as the main character in the related series, The Haunting of Hill House. In this miniseries, Siegel plays Viola, the once iron-willed lady of the manor who got sick and refused to succumb to the illness. Filled with rage, her spirit never left the manor — even all these years later.

4 Hypnotic

     The Long Game

Jenn is unhappy in her life. After meeting at a friend’s party, she reluctantly agrees to hypnotherapy with Dr. Collin Meade to try and get her life back on track. At first, it seems the therapy is working, but when she tries to kill her ex while hypnotized, she realizes things aren’t what they seem.

Hypnotic is by all accounts a psychological thriller. Siegel’s performance helps carry along a subpar script and obvious ending. As the only film on this list not directed by Flanagan, viewers couldn’t help but wonder if this film would have excelled a bit more if he was attached. For what it’s worth, Siegel carries this film and makes it worth watching.

3 Hush

     Intrepid and Blumhouse

A deaf and mute writer is working on her next book in her secluded home. With only one set of neighbors close by, Maddie, played by Siegel, is virtually on her own. One night, a man in mask appears outside her window and stops at nothing to get inside. Fighting in complete silence, Maddie uses her knowledge of the horror genre to survive.

With little to no dialogue, Siegel’s performance in Hush is arguably one of the best of her career. To be able to hold attention without speaking is no easy feat. With only herself and the masked man as the main characters, Siegel was able to make the most of her screentime with her actions. This edge-of-your-seat thriller is a must-see, as the script was also written by Siegel. Be sure to pay close attention to the name of the novel her character is writing, as it’s the same as one of the shows on this list!

2 The Haunting of Hill House

The Haunting of Hill House follows the Crain family who has been plagued by haunting memories from a haunted house. The series flashes between the present day when the family has gathered together again for their youngest sister’s funeral and the past when they were all living in Hill House. Filled with ghosts and the threatening Bent-Neck Lady, the Crain family is never the same after living in this house.

In this miniseries, adapted from the novel by Shirley Jackson, Siegel plays one of the Crain children. Her character Theo, or Theodora, is a psychologist who has a special power that has been passed down from her mother and grandmother. She has the ability to feel the emotions of others by simply touching them. Because of this, she often wears gloves and is very guarded. Throughout the series, we see Theo loosen up a little as she meets a woman who helps her find happiness despite everything. Theo’s character is important to the series as she helps give viewers an unspoken insight into what has happened.

1 Midnight Mass

An isolated community only available via boat is no longer thriving as it was. When their priest goes off to the holy land, a new charismatic albeit somewhat familiar priest takes his place. His coming brings a renewed religious fever to the small island along with something else entirely.

In arguably one of the best thrillers of 2021, Siegel plays the kind school teacher Erin Greene, who has a rough backstory of abusive relationships. Her character returned to the island, pregnant with her abusive husband’s child. Upon returning to the island, she also returns to her faith and is a follower of the new priest until Riley, played by Zac Gilford, sheds light on whom the priest really is. Midnight Mass is an absolute must-see as it pairs Flanagan and Siegel in their best work to date.
