Kathy Griffin says she isn’t sure whether her voice will return to normal after it was affected by treatment that she received for lung cancer.

The My Life on the D-List comedian, 61, appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Tuesday and explained that she sustained vocal cord damage during surgery and while she was “working on” her voice, she’s uncertain if it’ll return to its pre-cancer tone.

“I think it’ll get back to normal but I’m not sure. I’m still working on it. I am funnier, because I think I sound non-threatening and demure. That’s my new angle,” she laughed.

Though Griffin says she’s admittedly “self-conscious” as she returns to the stage, audiences have been gracious about the change in her voice—and one crowd in particular stood out to her for their kindness during her performance.

In April, the outspoken comedian shared a clip from an LGBTQ+ charity ball on her Instagram, where she had been invited to roast the benefit’s honoree.

Griffin added that while she would like to be back on tour as soon as possible, it’s dependent on strengthening her voice—but promises fans that she’s doing “all kinds of pathology lessons and all that other boring stuff so I can go back to projecting.”

Griffin confirmed that she was cancer-free in February, after sharing her lung cancer diagnosis publicly in August 2021.
