Awards Ceremonies are renowned for throwing up unexpected moments, controversies and reunions. This year’s Golden Globe Awards did not cause as much fuss on social media thanks to everyone behaving themselves, but it did deliver one touching moment when Everything Everywhere All at Once star Ke Huy Quan was reunited with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom director Steven Spielberg.
Quan was given his big break by Spielberg, when he played the role of Short Round in Harrison Ford’s second Indiana Jones adventure. However, after that and an appearance in The Goonies, Quan found it hard to get work in Hollywood and dropped out of the business for almost three decades.

With both the star and director up for numerous awards this year for their respective movies Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Fablemans, they have reconnected on the awards trail, but the Golden Globes offered them a chance to appear together in front of the camera. As well as a photograph of the pair making its way online, author Mark Harris shared candid shots of Quan and Spielberg greeting each other during a commercial break in the ceremony.
Ke Huy Quan Still Says His Career Is All Down To Steven Spielberg
Paramount Pictures
Ke Huy Quan walked away with the Best Supporting Actor Award for his role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, which also earned his co-star Michelle Yoeh a Best Actress Award, and during his speech, he made sure to point out Steven Spielberg in the crowd as the man who originally gave him his shot at Hollywood in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies. During an emotional speech, Quan said:
Whether Ke Huy Quan and Steven Spielberg will ever work together on a project again is unclear, but the almost father/son relationship between them is undeniable and if it can happen, then it probably will. For now though, many fans have been questioning whether Quan would be up for reprising any of his old roles, and it is certainly something he would consider.
“I was raised to never forget where I came from and to always remember who gave me my first opportunity. I’m so happy to see Steven Spielberg here tonight. Steven, thank you. When I started my career as a child actor in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, I felt so lucky to have been chosen. As I grew older, I started to wonder if that was it, if that was just luck. For so many years, I was afraid I had nothing more to offer; no matter what I did, I would never surpass what I achieved as a kid. Thankfully, more than 30 years later, two guys thought of me. They remembered that kid, and they gave me an opportunity to try again.”
With the Oscars just around the corner, there is every possibility that both Quan and Spielberg could be together celebrating again in just a couple of months’ time.
“I love the character of Short Round. He’s funny and courageous and saves Indy’s ass. If Disney or Lucasfilm ever come to me and say, ‘We want to do a Short Round spin-off’, I’m there man! I love that character so much and it would just be incredible to revisit so many years later.”
