Drew Barrymore has been curating a unique talk show ever since the first episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. While many talk show hosts share past memories with their guests, and the hosts may have been in the public eye for quite some time, for Drew Barrymore, the actor, producer, and director has been a part of the Hollywood world since she was 8 months old. So when a guest vists her show, countless exchanges evoke memories shared by the guest, the host and the audience. When co-stars of Babes in Toyland Keanu Reeves and Drew Barrymore got together, they took us back with them to 1987.
The 11-year-old Drew Barrymore starred with the 23-year-old Keanu Reeves for the remake, and a bond was formed that would compel Reeves to treat the 16-year-old for the ride of her life. As Keanu took the stage, Drew Barrymore launches into a sweet and adventuresome memory shared with her guest. “Can I take it back to a memory that I have with you?” Barrymore asks. “I was at this club and it was my 16th birthday and you came in – This is the memory I have of it. If you have anything to add or change please let me know – And you walked in and you grabbed my hand and you took me outside and you put me on your motorcycle and we drove at the warp speed of my life.”

“We went and you took me on the ride of my life. And I was so free, I was such a free human being,” she recalled. “And it was just this moment where I just remember loving life and being so happy. I hold it so dear because the older we get, the harder it is to get to that feeling.”
“If we were on third, at night, yeah we could get on it,” referencing the lack of traffic on the 3rd St once the sun goes down. “Riding your bike is thrilling and there is a freedom to it.” The word freedom prompte Barrynore to ask Reeves if he has a memory that he can recall where he felt absolutely free.
“That sense of being free was play. It was fun,” he explained. “I love what happens after someone says ‘Action!’ The director or the first AD, sometimes… and then we begin. We’re in the moment….It’s fun, so I’m really grateful to earn a living and have a career.”
Many folks don’t get to tune into daytime chat shows or might not be interested in the couch-hopping that sees celebrities relay the same information about their latest project peppered with the rehearsed anecdote. We’ve seen our fair share of talk shows, but what truly stands out for The Drew Barrymore Show is the intimacy and shared careers with the guests coupled with the audience’s familiarity with the host, her career and her personal life that has been chromicled in the tabloids for 4 decades. Give it a shot! Some hosts have Steven Spielberg on their show and discuss West Side Story. Drew talks E.T., hanging out poolside as a teenager and spending holidays together. Their memory-filled conversation is not rare for the program. It’s what makes nearly every episode fascinating.
