A fourth installment in The Matrix franchise, The Matrix Resurrections, seemingly came out of nowhere, and while the fourth outing in the series was unexpected (and to some unnecessary), according to Keanu Reeves there may be even more to come. In an interview with Fandom, the actor expressed his willingness to bring Neo back again should director Lana Wachowski want him to.

Reeves clearly has a lot of faith in the filmmaker, as well as a genuine interest in the future of the characters and the franchise as a whole. His co-star Carrie-Anne Moss, who reprises the role of Trinity in The Matrix Resurrections, echoed Reeves’ sentiments over another follow-up saying, “Totally, of course … it would be amazing.”

“That’s a Lana Wachowski question. I mean, if she wanted to do another story and wanted to include me I would be honoured and grateful, and I’d like to see what happens to Trinity and Neo, and the world.”

New recruit Priyanka Chopra Jonas is also on board should Lana Wachowski wish to continue playing in the world of The Matrix. The actress revealed what she would like to see in any future adventure, as well as confirming the character she is playing in The Matrix Resurrections. “I would love to see where Sati’s character would go and [find out] would she be able to find her greater purpose?” she said. “Which is peace for all humanity, which she has done [before] and stood for – humanity and machines [that is].”

One cast member who is a little more a cautious over The Matrix 5 however is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who joins the sci-fi action series as a mysteriously younger version of Morpheus. “If I’m honest, I think that before I even get to those conversations, I just want this film to come out and to see how this film resonates with audiences,” the actor said, rather sensibly. “In terms of where you go next, I think that would depend a lot on how it’s received by the world, and how it’s digested, and then to say, based on that, is there a need to continue on or did the film do what it was intended to do?”

Warner Bros. are also eager to continue the story beyond The Matrix Resurrections, with Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff recently stating that the upcoming outing was “originally conceived to reboot the series on the big screen,” and that “anytime Lana [Wachowski] wants to make a movie, we’re all in.”

Before audiences potentially fall down a fifth rabbit hole, we still have The Matrix Resurrections to look forward to. Picking up twenty years after the events of the original trilogy, the sequel finds Neo plugged back in and living an ordinary life under his original identity as Thomas A. Anderson. Haunted by dreams of his bullet-dodging past, Neo is soon taken on another journey to the truth by a new band of freedom fighters, who must face down a much more dangerous Matrix, and battle a new enemy.

Produced, co-written, and directed by Lana Wachowski, The Matrix Resurrections is scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures theatrically on December 22, 2021, and will also stream digitally on the ad-free tier of HBO Max in the United States for a month beginning on that same date.
