It’s been almost a full year since Bob Saget died, and while it’s been quite the “surreal” experience for his widow, Kelly Rizzo, she has been moving forward in a way that would make the late Full House star proud. On Jan. 9, 2022, Saget was found dead in a Florida hotel after performing a night of performing stand-up comedy while on tour. Investigators determined that Saget died of head trauma, likely from a fall in his room. He was 65 years old.
On a recent edition of Today (via EW), Rizzo, who’s the host of the food, travel, and music series Eat Travel Rock, spoke about how she has learned to focus less on the grief and more on the gratitude that she has for the time she got to spend with Saget. While still heartbroken over losing her husband, she’s thankful for the six-year relationship, and thinking about this is something that helps keep her going.

“The missing him and the being sad about it doesn’t go away,” Rizzo explained. “The grief now has really morphed into just this tremendous gratitude for the time that we had together.”
She added, “When I think about the fact that I haven’t talked to or seen my husband in a year, that’s very surreal and very, very strange.”

Rizzo continues to honor Saget in many ways after his passing. She has maintained a close relationship with his three daughters - Aubrey, Lara, and Jennifer - noting that “keeping them close really is everything.” Rizzo also commented on the recent Instagram post she made for the holiday season acknowledging her final Christmas with Saget. She believes that these kinds of posts are “having some sort of impact on people who have gone through something similar and now it’s just given me this whole new sense of purpose in life to be able to share this.”

Rizzo is also honoring Saget with how she’s managed to put a positive spin on the loss, as this is something her husband would have wanted. Asked to sum up 2022 for her personally, Rizzo expressed how the year began with unimaginable heartbreak, but coming into 2023, she has a different outlook.

“When I look at the beginning of the year of course, I’m like, this is the worst thing I’ve ever gone through,” she said. “But I’m also really trying to take from it what you can do to turn this into a positive experience. Because Bob did that, he had so much loss in his life, and he turned everything in to a positive, reflective experience. If he did that, then I want to use this experience in the same way.”
