Lionsgate has released the official trailer for Jesus Revolution. Based on a true story, the film takes us back to the 1970s to explore the rise of that decade’s famous spiritual awakening in the United States. Kelsey Grammer stars as a pastor who partners up with local youth to spread the word of Christ in a remarkable way, and you can see what we mean by watching the new trailer below.

The official synopsis for Jesus Revolution is as follows:

Jon Erwin and Jon Gunn wrote the screenplay for the film, while Erwin directs with Brent McCorkle. Kevin Downe produced with Jon and Andrew Erwin alongside Josh Walsh and Daryl Lefever. Jesus Revolution stars Kelsey Grammer, Anna Grace Barlow, Jonathan Roumie, Nicholas Cirillo, Joel Courtney, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Ally Ioannides, Julia Campbell, Nic Bishop, and Jolie Jenkins.

Inspired by a true movement, Jesus Revolution tells the story of a young Greg Laurie (Joel Courtney) being raised by his struggling mother, Charlene (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) in the 1970s. Laurie and a sea of young people descend on sunny Southern California to redefine truth through all means of liberation. Everything changes when Laurie meets Lonnie Frisbee (Jonathan Roumie), a charismatic hippie-street-preacher, and Pastor Chuck Smith (Kelsey Grammer) who have thrown open the doors of Smith’s languishing church to a stream of wandering youth. What unfolds becomes the greatest spiritual awakening in American history. Rock and roll, radical love, and newfound faith lead to a JESUS REVOLUTION that turns one counterculture movement into a revival that changes the world.

“The movie is set in a very specific time and place, but the theme of finding a deeper meaning to life, in the midst of a fractured and broken world, is timeless,” Erwin said in a statement when the movie was announced. “In his iconic performances, Kelsey has a proven ability to connect with audiences in a real, vulnerable way, which will make him a tremendous presence in this film.”

“Jesus has been a profound influence in my life. I am proud to be a part of this film," Grammer added.

The film is also notable for bringing back former child star Shaun Weiss, best known for appearing in the Mighty Ducks movie trilogy. Since growing up, Weiss has had major struggles with addiction, but after celebrating years of sobriety, he’s now been getting back into work. In April, he provided a sneak peek at his first acting role in 14 years which happens to be a part in Jesus Revolution.
