Kevin Costner isn’t backing down from his political stance, telling USA Today he will be “OK” if he loses fans over his views. The 67-year-old actor has a long history in Hollywood, from winning a Best Director Academy Award in Dances With Wolves and iconic performances in The Postman, The Bodyguard, and his latest role as John Dutton in Yellowstone.

During his interview, the actor discussed his endorsement of Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, a harsh critic of former President Donald Trump. Though he realizes some fans will disagree with his political stance, whether it be republicans or democrats, the actor says he doesn’t really care. “Just because you lose doesn’t mean you’re done; it doesn’t mean you’re even wrong,” Costner explains. “I was clear that [Cheney] probably wasn’t going to win her election. But I wanted to let her know, as a citizen, how much I appreciated her brave, clear-headed stance.”

He continues, saying he doesn’t care about the different views between himself and his fans. “I didn’t really care how the cookie crumbles, that people that liked me now don’t like me. That’s OK.” Cheney was happy for Costner’s support, tweeting a photo of the actor in her gear. “I’m for Liz Cheney,” Costner’s shirt reads in the picture.

Would Costner ever consider running for office like his John Dutton counterpart? The actor doesn’t think so. “No, I don’t think there’s any reason for me to run,” the actor says. “Though I wish the people that did run had a bigger vision and more of a morality about how they see the country evolving. I’m disappointed.” Kevin Costner is sticking to his guns regarding politics, regardless of any party’s feelings toward him.

Yellowstone Creator Taylor Sheridan Says the Series Isn’t a ‘Republican’ Show

Yellowstone began airing in 2018 with Kevin Costner front and center. The actor has led the series through four seasons, with the fifth currently airing on the Paramount Network. The show follows the Yellowstone Ranch, owned by the Dutton family. Outside parties constantly encroach on their home for their piece of the majestic land.

Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone and its various spinoffs, recently shared his views on the series and why he doesn’t regard the show as a “red-state Game of Thrones.”

Yellowstone has massive political implications throughout the series, especially in Season 5. John Dutton was elected as Governor of Montana in the first episode of the season, and his views plan to roll back the cities and commercial expansion in the state. Then, questions surrounding Sheridan and Costner’s political views were brought up, though neither feels they support one party nor the other in the series. Fans can tune into the rest of Yellowstone Season 5, premiering every Sunday at 8 pm E.T. on the Paramount Network.

“They refer to it as ‘the conservative show’ or ‘the Republican show’ or ‘the red-state Game of Thrones.’ And I just sit back laughing. I’m like, ‘Really?’ The show’s talking about the displacement of Native Americans and the way Native American women were treated and about corporate greed and the gentrification of the West, and land-grabbing. That’s a red-state show?”
