If you ask Kevin Smith, it’s a bunch of baloney that Warner Bros. Discovery has shelved Batgirl when the film was pretty much already in the can. Months back, Batgirl had finished filming and was deep into post-production with test screenings taking place. Days ago, it was reported that the movie had been axed with its release fully canceled, meaning fans will not get to see Batgirl at all. It won’t have a streaming release nor will it be put into theaters, turning the project into “lost media.”

Filmmaker and comic book enthusiast Kevin Smith had some harsh words to say about the situation. Speaking about the cancelation on his YouTube account (via Comicbook.com), Smith suggested how this move paints the studio in a negative light as it’s a “bad look to cancel the Latina Batgirl movie.” There has been some speculation that the movie was pulled because it was of low quality, and while Smith doubts that this is true, he feels that the film should have been released regardless.

Smith goes on to argue that even if the film looked “cheap” compared to other superhero tentpole movies, it wouldn’t have made too much of a difference, pointing to the popularity of Arrow and its related shows on the CW. It has the filmmaker questioning if maybe there’s another reason behind the scenes that led to the cancelation, as he can’t help but feel leery about the official explanation.

Batgirl Has Been Buried by Warner Bros. Discovery

There have been many titles getting axed after the Warner Bros., Discovery merger with new strategies for upcoming content getting put into place. By far, however, Batgirl is the most shocking, given that it had been filmed and was already creating some buzz. Not only would the film have made history by starring a Latina actress as Barbara Gordon, it would have also surely had fans tuning in to see Brendan Fraser as Firely, Michael Keaton as Batman, and J.K. Simmons as James Gordon.

In any case, Batgirl has been put on the shelf, leading fans to only wonder what could have been. It joins Scoob! Holiday Haunt as another film that was pretty much completed before its release was outright canceled.
