It has been three years since word of a third installment of the Kick-Ass franchise began to circulate, and since then we have not seen much on how that development is going, but creator Mark Millar has now given a much needed update on the potential arrival of Kick-Ass 3. The original 2010 movie was based on Millar’s comic book, which featured illustrations by John Romita Jr. and centered on the life of teenage wannabe superhero Dave Lizewski, whose actions end up going viral on the internet leading him to be the instigator of other people becoming their own superheroes as he gets involved with Mindy “Hit Girl” McCready and Big Daddy, a couple of vigilantes who are trying to take down a family of criminals.

The original Kick-Ass movie included the ensemble cast of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nicholas Cage, Chloe Grace Moretz, Mark Strong and Christopher Mintz-Plasse in the comedy take on the superhero genre, which gained a lot of praise for its quirky and unique take on the subject matter but at the same time managed to attract a number of complaints for R-rated violence and language in relation to the 11 year old character played by Moretz, despite there being plenty of other movies involving violent children that are done with a much more serious tone. The film spawned a sequel, which brought in Jim Carrey among others, but the film suffered mixed reviews from both audiences and critics who didn’t see it as having the same appeal as its predecessor.
Unfortunately when it comes to a new outing for the make-shift superheroes, Mark Millar reveals that many of the rumors heard over the last few years have been very much exaggerated. Speaking to ScreenRant, Millar explained the situation and where he stands on the prospect of a threequel.
Give the reviews of Kick-Ass 2, it is not surprising that none of the cast have voiced an interest of doing more, and that led to the suggestion that a reboot could be on the cards, but it seems that as far as Millar is concerned, the franchise is not an ongoing concern. At the moment, Matthew Vaughn is director on The King’s Man, a prequel to 2014’s Kingsman: The Secret Service which was based on the comic book The Secret Service by Millar, and is now set to arrive in theaters this Christmas after a long Covid delay.
“You know, it’s funny, occasionally something pops up about a third Kick-Ass, but it’s never true. What happens is, I think, one of the original actors is being interviewed about another movie and they’ll be asked, ‘Is there another Kick-Ass’ and they’ll say, ‘Well, I don’t know maybe’ and then it becomes a headline, ‘Maybe Another Kick-Ass Is Coming.’ But in reality, we’ve literally never had a conversation about it.”
“I talk to Matthew Vaughn three times a week, Matthew is one of my best friends, and we’ve no plans because I’m over at Netflix and he has deals over with Apple and Kick-Ass is Universal. So there’s definitely no plans, maybe at some point in the future, we do have one last story to tell, which is the big finale storyline. I kind of like the idea of that as well, because practically we can come back a little later to all the characters in different places, so there’s a potential story there at some point. But I pray that nobody reads this and mistakes that for us saying Kick-Ass 3 is in the works, because there’s 100 percent no plans to do it at the moment.”
