Multi-hyphenate Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi has been added to the cast of the entirely silent action-thriller Silent Night from the iconic director of Face/Off, John Woo. Mescudi rose to fame as Kid Cudi and is known for his revolutionary approach to hip-hop, winning two Grammy Awards for his music and being nominated for five more (his song “Day ’n’ Nite was recently featured in Disney+’s Moon Knight trailer). Kid Cudi is set to star alongside Joel Kinnaman (The Suicide Squad), Harold Torres (Run Coyote Run), and Catalina Sandino Moreno (The Quarry). The film is already in production in Mexico City.

After the announcement was first posted to Deadline on April 4, 2022, Kid Cudi took to Twitter to share his excitement about joining the cast. He posted on his timeline that he “can’t wait for y’all to see this masterpiece from the GOD John Woo.”

Silent Night tells the story of Godlock (Kinnaman), described as “a father on a mission to avenge his young son who was tragically caught in the crossfire of gang violence on Christmas Eve.” After the son dies from his injuries, his father vows to avenge his murder by any means necessary and gets nearly killed along the way. In the film, Mescudi, who recently starred in Don’t Look Up with Ariana Grande, will portray a detective named Dennis Vassel.

The producers of Silent Night are Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee for Thunder Road, Christian Mercuri for Capstone, and Lori Tilkin for A Better Tomorrow Films. As for executive producers on the Woo film, they include David Haring, Joe Gatta, and Ruzanna Kegeyan for Capstone, and Mike Gabrawy, and Will Flynn for Thunder Road.

“Based on what we’ve seen from set so far, it’s clear that Scott has a presence and gravitas that is incredibly captivating,” Gatta said. “He is a powerful addition, and perfect complement, to this stellar cast.”

Silent Night is John Woo’s First Hollywood Film Since Paycheck

John Woo’s Silent Night is his first Hollywood film since 2003 when he made Paycheck, based on the short story by Philip K. Dick. The film starred Ben Affleck, Aaron Eckhart, Paul Giamatti, Uma Thurman, Michael C. Hall, Joe Morton, and Colm Feore. For Hollywood, he has also directed films like the John Travolta and Christian Slater starring Broken Arrow and the Academy Award-nominated Face/Off and top-grossing film of 2000 Mission: Impossible II.

But in 2008, the famed director returned to Asian cinema with a two-part epic Red Cliff, which he followed with another two-part film, The Crossing, in 2014 and 2015. Featuring an all-star cast, the four-hour film is about passengers on the doomed Taiping steamer that sank in 1949 en route from mainland China to Taiwan and is described by some as “China’s Titanic.”
