While we are finally getting to see Kingsman prequel The King’s Man this Christmas, with some very mixed reviews coming from preview showings, it looks like work is already underway to complete the trilogy that began with Kingsman: The Secret Service and continued in Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The new prequel seems to make a big change to the tone of the spy comedy series, and many fans will be expecting Kingsman 3 to bring back a familiar feel as it returns to the story of Taron Egerton’s character Eggsy, and as Matthew Vaughan revealed to ComicBook.com while promoting the new movie, they are all set to begin filming in September 2022.

Franchise star Egerton already teased “there is a script” back in 2019, which is when work was originally completed on The King’s Man, but thanks to the COVID pandemic the release of the prequel was postponed and when it came to Kingsman 3, there was the Disney takeover of Fox to consider which put the new film on uncertain ground. Going on the actor’s enthusiasm to take on the role of Eggsy one more time to complete his story, and Vaughn’s new comments, it would appear that Disney are happy to continue on with the Kingsman franchise for another round.
The Kingsman movies are based on the comic book series by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, and made their cinematic debut in 2014, which starred Egerton as Gary “Eggsy” Unwin as he was recruited and trained into the Kingsman organisation, and was thrown into a mission to stop megalomanic Richmond Valentine wiping out most of the world to deal with climate change. With a supporting cast including Samuel L. Jackson as Valentine, Colin Firth, Michael Caine and Mark Strong, the film gained mostly positive reviews and grossed over $414 million which obviously instigated the sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle in 2017.
Most of the cast were back for the second round, and this time they added some heavyweight support with Halle Berry, Julianne Moore, Jeff Bridges, Pedro Pascal, Channing Tatum and even Elton John joining the cast. Though the movie performed as well as its predecessor at the box office, the film didn’t quite hit the same highs with the critics or audiences with its bladder-busting 141 minute runtime coming under fire for stretching the plot of the film a bit too thin. That was still enough to see Fox green light The King’s Man, which is released on December 22nd after numerous delays.
Fans of the movie series will be delighted to know that a third installment of the main series is going to be heading our way, and with sights set on filming late next year we will likely see the return of Eggsy and Co around Christmas 2023. Whether there will be any further adventures beyond that point will solely come down to the success of The King’s Man, which looks on shaky ground thanks to a combination of lukewarm reviews and the film being pitted against Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Matrix Resurrections at the box office, and Kingsman 3 when it is finally released.
