Original Spider-Man trilogy actress Kirsten Dunst would want to make a comeback as Mary Jane. Dunst played Mary Jane Watson opposite Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s original trilogy centred around Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man lore, bringing numerous characters such as Green Goblin, Dr. Octopus, Venom, Harry Osborn, and Sandman to live-action.

Now that a number of these characters are set to reprise their roles in the upcoming MCU installment, Spider-Man: No Way Home, there had been rumors of Dunst’s return as Mary Jane, even though in some little capacity. However, no real evidence or leak has confirmed any such casting. In fact, Dunst had explicitly denied her involvement in No Way Home earlier this month.

However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, where Dunst was celebrating the release of her new Netflix film, The Power of Dog, she obviously was asked about her feelings on all these new recalls to older Spider-Man movies in No Way Home. Dunst right away cleared her intentions on playing Mary Jane again, saying this.

And this wasn’t the first time Dunst had expressed a similar interest in playing her iconic role again. Last month, during the world premiere of The Power of Dog, she told Variety.

“I wish they’d put me in another one. Like, old-girl Mary Jane – why not?”

If the speculations concerning Tobey’s involvement in No Way Home are to be believed, then there would be four actors from Raimi’s films making their comebacks in the upcoming MCU movie. Whether the same would happen with Dunst in any future film down the line or not, the actress is surely powered-up to have Mary Jane back on-screen.

“I would do it. Why not? That would be fun. I would never say no to something like that… I’d be old MJ at this point with little Spidey babies.”

Kirsten Dunst is the only actress to play Mary Jane in any of the three Spider-Man franchises unless you consider Shailene Woodley’s edited appearance as the character in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Though Zendaya’s character Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man trilogy is named MJ, her initials stand for Michelle Jones and not Mary Jane. So, Dunst is the only person who’d cross fans’ minds when Mary Jane would be the topic of discussion.

When theories of a multiversal storyline first came to prominence regarding No Way Home (and that was after Molina was cast as Dr. Octopus), a number of them included Kirsten Dunst, as well as Emma Stone (from The Amazing Spider-Man films), including both of them heavily in proposed or speculated storylines. And now that Kirsten Dunst herself has opened up about her desire to once again play Mary Jane as an older iteration of that character, fans will eagerly await such casting confirmation in the future.
