Director Rian Johnson has revealed further insight into what audiences can expect from his upcoming whodunnit sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Speaking with Netflix’s Tudum, Johnson revealed that the Knives Out follow-up will delve more into who master investigator Benoit Blanc is and what makes him tick, with Blanc taking more of a lead protagonist role than the first time around.

Starring Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, the first Knives Out proved to be a huge hit with both audiences and critics alike, as well as a welcome comeback for old-school whodunnit-style stories. Blanc and his Southern, Kentucky Fried, Foghorn Leghorn Drawl were a clear highlight, and it will be interesting to see how much more we learn of the mysterious man who remained such an enigma come the end of the first movie.

“You definitely get to know him a little bit better. In the first one, because of the way it was structured, Marta, Ana de Armas’ character, was very much the protagonist. In a big way, Blanc was the threat. He was almost the antagonist in terms of just the story structure, because you were worried, even as they got closer, that he was going to catch her and he was going to have to turn her over at the end. So Blanc was always outside of the sphere of our protagonist and was a little bit more of an enigma in the first movie. Whereas, in this one, Blanc gets an invitation to come to this murder mystery on this island. We’re very much meeting these people and getting into this world through his eyes.”

While details had largely remained a mystery, we now have some details regarding the direction of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Including the plot. “When a tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites some of his nearest and dearest for a getaway on his private Greek island, it soon becomes clear that all is not perfect in paradise,” the newly revealed synopsis begins. “And when someone turns up dead, well, who better than Blanc to peel back the layers of intrigue?” Adding further intrigue, a new description of the movie adds, “If Knives Out was about the murderous ties of flesh and blood, Glass Onion makes a good case for being just as wary of one’s closest friends.”

Much like its predecessor, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery has been written and directed by Rian Johnson and, again like its predecessor, will boast a stellar cast of suspects alongside Daniel Craig. Falling under the microscope of Benoit Blanc this time around, and recently revealed in a new image from the upcoming murder mystery, are the likes of Edward Norton as Miles Bron, a tech billionaire, as well as Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, and Ethan Hawke.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is scheduled to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022. A global release date has also now been revealed, with Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery due to land on Netflix this holiday season on December 23, 2022.
