There’s no telling when Detective Benoit Blanc will return following the release of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Back in 2019, writer-director Rian Johnson released the first Knives Out, a fun murder mystery featuring Daniel Craig leading an ensemble cast as a clever sleuth looking to uncover the murderer’s identity. Netflix would go on to sign Johnson to a lucrative deal to produce two Knives Out sequels exclusive to the streamer, with Glass Onion serving as the first of those two movies.

As of now, it’s unclear when fans can expect to see the third installment of the Knives Out trilogy. In a new chat with ComicBook.com, Johnson and producer Ram Bergman shared some details on where they currently stand with Knives Out 3. As Bergman first explains, we could still be quite a ways off, as Johnson hasn’t actively begun working on the film. That’s the opposite of what happened with Glass Onion, as Johnson had the idea already set to be jotted down on paper when it came time to write that script. Meanwhile, he has no idea yet on what to do with the third Knives Out.

Johnson also weighed in, acknowledging that he should really get started with his work on Knives Out 3 knowing that the fans want to see it. The problem is that he is completely blank on what to do with the story, having no clue about its setting or what kind of mystery Benoit Blanc will next pursue. Perhaps the right idea will pop into Johnson’s head at some point soon, otherwise, the filmmaker refuses to say when we can anticipate the movie because he truly has no idea.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is playing in select theaters and will premiere globally on Netflix for streaming on Dec. 23, 2022. You can watch the film’s official trailer below.
