For fans of That ’70s Show, it’s an honor to be called a “dumbass” by actor Kurtwood Smith. In the hit comedy series, Smith played Red Forman, husband to Debra Jo Rupp’s Kitty and father of Topher Grace’s Eric. All three have reprised their roles for That ’90s Show, a follow-up series that recently premiered on Netflix. While primarily focusing on a new cast, Smith and Rupp are featured in a recurring role with the younger characters still hanging out in the same old basement at the Forman family home.
In a new interview with Collider, Smith addressed his return in That ’90s Show. He spoke about how they had an advantage this time around with having established characters to use for the follow-up series, and with that came some of their trademarks that were already known to work with fans. That notably includes the peculiar laugh by Kitty along with the way Red would often call people “dumbass.” As the actor explains:

Smith went on to explain just how often fans are asking him to call them a “dumbass” in real life, as here’s what he said when asked just how much that happens to the actor.

After having several years with an empty nest, the Forman home fills back up in That ’90s Show. The series picks up with Red and Kitty’s granddaughter, Leia (Callie Haverda) coming to stay for the summer. She makes friends with the local youth and hangs out in the same old basement with an all-new cast of young characters. Of course, this provides much more opportunities for Red to say his favorite word.
