The latest image from the highly anticipated sequel Avatar: The Way of Water delves us deeper into the underwater world of Pandora. Released courtesy of the latest issue of Empire Magazine, the image shows a young Na’vi, no doubt one of Jake and Neytiri’s children, enjoying the wonderful vast oceans of this alien world.

The image shows off the sheer level of detail that will be created when bringing Avatar: The Way of Water to life. Pandora is a planet where everything in nature is connected, and this sense of harmony will continue as we explore the depths of the deep seas and the various creatures that inhabit them. The world of Avatar is already known for being blue thanks to the color of the native Na’vi, and this latest image reveals that the upcoming sequel will enhance these blues even more so as audiences reunite with Jake and Neytiri and enter the mysterious underwater world.

Avatar: The Way of Water will introduce audiences to Jake and Neytiri’s new family, which will include several native Na’vi children, Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss), and adoptive teenage daughter Kiri, played by Sigourney Weaver. Their household will also include a human boy named Miles Socorro, also known as Spider. Played by The Night Sitter star Jack Champion, Spider is taken in by Jake and Neytiri after being born at the now-abandoned military base on Pandora. Too young to be returned to Earth, Jake decides to take the child in as one of their own — a decision that will cause tension between the parents.

Returning director James Cameron has teased the scope of Avatar: The Way of Water, as well as the further sequels, comparing the franchise to that of known fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings. “What I said to Fox regime at the time was, ‘I’ll do it, but we’ve got to play a larger game here,” Cameron explained. “I don’t want to just do a movie and do a movie and do a movie. I want to tell a bigger story.’ I said, ‘Imagine a series of novels like The Lord of the Rings existed, and we’re adapting them.’ Now that was great in theory, but then I had to create the fricken’ novels from which to adapt it.”

Avatar: The Way of Water is due for release on December 16, 2022. While it has taken a while for the world of Avatar to continue, there are now three sequels set to be released on December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028, respectively.
