Another day, another vivid costume change for Barbie stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. The pair were spotted once again on the set of Warner Bros. Pictures and director Greta Gerwig’s upcoming adaptation of the iconic Mattel doll, with the actors sporting roller skates and neon outfits so bright that they should come with a migraine warning.

The images come from Twitter user @cravemedia_, and show Robbie and Gosling in character as Barbie and Ken. Plot details for the Barbie movie remain under wraps at present, but based on the onslaught of set images that have made their way online in recent weeks, the story will involve plenty of conversations between Barbie and Ken amid a variety of costume changes. The costumes seen so far in these behind-the-scenes snaps have all taken inspiration from the Barbie toy line, with the latest outfit paying homage to the “Hot Skatin’” Barbie of the 1990s.

Based on the treasured toy line by Mattel and directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay written by herself and Noah Baumbach, the Barbie movie will introduce several different versions of Barbie and Ken. Starring alongside Margot Robbie as the main Barbie, the film will also feature Issa Rae as another Barbie and Hari Nef as a Barbie, with Sex Education star Emma Mackey expected to play another Barbie.

Ryan Gosling will star as Ken, with Ncuti Gatwa and Simu Liu on board as alternate versions of Ken. The rest of the Barbie supporting cast includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Ariana Greenblatt, Alexandra Shipp, Michael Cera, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Emerald Fennell, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, Connor Swindells, Ritu Arya, Jamie Demetriou, and Will Ferrell as the CEO of a toy company.

The Barbie Movie Will Promote Confidence, Curiosity & Communication

Plot details surrounding the Barbie movie continue to remain a secret, but the casting of several different versions of Barbie and Ken suggests that the story will take place, at least in part, within some sort of “Barbie” world where everyone is either a Barbie or a Ken. It has also been suggested that Barbie will follow Robbie’s version of the character who feels like she does not belong, and leaves this secret world for ours.

Margot Robbie has said that Barbie will promote “confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery. Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president.”

The actress has also suggested that the Barbie movie will be the next in line to take things in a meta direction. “We like the things that feel a little left of center,” Robbie said. “Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted.’”

Barbie is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 21, 2023.
