Oscar-winning filmmaker Paul Haggis is hoping to prove his innocence in an ongoing civil trial, and on Monday, King of Queens star Leah Remini served as a character witness on his behalf. Taking to bat for Haggis by appearing through a video chat, Remini testified with confidence that the Crash director is innocent of the sexual assault allegations that have been leveled against him.

“Men and women who have been raped absolutely deserve justice, but in this case, it’s absolutely Paul who is the victim here,” Remini testified, per Variety.

Haggis is on trial for an alleged sexual assault that is said to have occurred in 2013. Both sides have acknowledged that there’s no clear evidence that Haggis’ accuser is affiliated with the Church of Scientology, though Remini says she believes that they’ve somehow orchestrated this sequence of events as payback for the Million Dollar Baby writer parting ways with them in 2011 after 35 years as a member. Remini, also a former lifelong member who left in 2013, has become an advocate for other former Scientologists, publicly accusing the Church’s heads of smearing former members as a response to them speaking out against the religion and the group’s practices.

Finding it odd that the Church is staying silent about the rape accusation while publicly lambasting Haggis in the past, Remini reportedly testified, “Scientology was heavy on the attack of Paul since leaving. And since this case, they have gone silent.”

Remini said that an unnamed accuser who testified for the plaintiff has a “Scientologist name” that sounded a bit familiar, but she couldn’t definitively say how the Church of Scientology may have been connected to the allegations. She suggested that she believes they are still responsible as Church auditors have the ability to “manipulate individuals” into believing they’d been assaulted. Remini also feels that the allegations are in line with the Church’s alleged campaigns to harass and financially ruin former members, something she says she’s dealt with plenty of herself.

As Remini testified: “One of the policies of Scientology is that the purpose of a lawsuit is not to win, but to harass. You would have to retain lawyers, and that would cost a lot of money. The purpose of this is to have you financially ruined so that the last thing you would want to do is enter a battle with Scientology.”

Of course, the allegations have had a severe impact on Haggis’ career, and the legal fees involved have also nearly bankrupted the filmmaker. It hasn’t been publicly stated exactly how much money the plaintiff is seeking from Haggis through the lawsuit. A decision is expected to be made by the end of the week.
