It is almost six months since Warner Bros. canceled the Leslie Grace and Brendan Fraser Batgirl movie. In that time fans have still not come to terms with the fact they will never get to see the finished movie, and the stars and crew of the film have continued to drip-feed information about what could have been. In a new interview with Collider, Leslie Grace reiterated her love for the movie, for having been part of its production, and especially for having had the chance to work with Brendan Fraser. Discussing her scenes with Fraser, Grace said:

“I truly had one of [the best] experiences with Batgirl. In terms of the experience of shooting, we were all so excited for people to see a lot of the action, a lot of the practical shots we did with fire. Our movie was full of practical fire, which was really hard to shoot. Brendan [Fraser], our villain, our Firefly, he was just so outstanding and so happy that he’s having this incredible moment—this Brenaissance as everyone says. He’s amazing. He’s one of the kindest people in the world, and I felt so blessed to have him as my sparring partner. We had so many amazing action scenes together where we were beating each other up, but hugging in between takes because he’s just so sweet. So I would’ve loved people to see those moments, but you know what? You have the experience, and you keep on rolling, and I feel so blessed, all in all, that I have those memories and hopefully maybe in some future, some clips will arise and people will get to enjoy a little bit of it. But for now, we’ll just have to keep it going as it going in comic folklore, I guess, with all of our memories and our stories while we can.”

Fans Are Still Getting Over Batgirl’s Cancelation, Especially For the Loss of Brendan Fraser’s Firefly.

If Warner Bros. believed that scrapping Batgirl was going to become a distant memory once James Gunn’s new DCU was on the horizon, then perhaps they didn’t quite read the room as well as they could have. At every opportunity, fans still reference the loss of the movie they never got to see, and those involved in making it seem to have made it a mission to not allow the film to simply fade away.

Another huge reason for the backlash against the cancelation of Batgirl was the fact that the film would have been part of Michael Keaton’s return as Batman, something that seems to have shifted from being a big story in the DCU’s future to a small footnote in the franchise. Of course, Keaton will still appear in The Flash, and could potentially also make a cameo in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but on the whole it looks like James Gunn’s new plans for the DCU have superseded all previous ideas.

How all of it ends up panning out for Warner Bros. Discovery is something that won’t be known for a while yet, but James Gunn’s first reveals of the new slate are the first stepping stone on a journey across a very wide and treacherous river.
