Fans have finally started to come to terms with the loss of the Leslie Grace-led Batgirl movie, but that doesn’t mean all of the film’s might-have-beens have been revealed yet. In a new post on Instagram, Grace teased what her end-of-movie Batgirl costume would have looked like, along with a number of behind-the-scenes photos from the movie’s production. Rather than making fans mourn for the movie’s cancelation, the reveal has made many share their thanks for not releasing the film.

When Warner Bros. Discovery revealed that Batgirl would not be getting a release, either in theaters or on HBO Max, it was met with outrage from fans of the character, Leslie Grace and Brendan Fraser, who was set to play the movie’s villain, Firefly. However, despite petitions, social media campaigns, and plenty of complaints directed at various Warner Bros. Discovery-related accounts and associates, it became clear very quickly that nothing was going to stop Batgirl being consigned to history even though the movie had completed the majority of its post-production at the time it was scrapped.

Now the new post showing the first look at the costume Leslie Grace’s Barbara Gordon would have slipped into in the movie’s final scenes has not exactly had the reaction you would expect. Instead, many fans have likened the costume to being even more “TV Movie” orientated than anything else that has been seen from the movie, with some even comparing to the 1960s Batman TV show.
Was Batgirl’s ‘Cheap’ Production to Blame For The Movie’s Cancelation?
Warner Bros. Pictures
It has been widely reported that Batgirl was canceled in favor of taking it as a tax write off. The movie had a production budget of around $90 million. According to insiders, the new Warner Bros. Discovery regime did not see the movie fitting with the future ideals required for the DCU and was not of a quality that could shoulder a theatrical release. Additionally, an HBO Max release was no longer on the cards due to changes in the WBD release strategy.
There are still plenty of fans who would love to see Batgirl for several reasons. As well as the movie being one of the first new movies to feature Brendan Fraser in a major role, the film would also have seen the return of Michael Keaton as Batman ahead of his appearance in The Flash and, at the time, potentially his own follow-up movie.
In the last couple of months, all of those plans, and Batgirl’s place in the DCU, have clearly been deconstructed to the point that the film no longer had a purpose. Michael Keaton’s DCU roles have seemingly been cut back to just an appearance in The Flash, and the DCU, as it currently looks, will be given a complete overhaul following 2023’s releases under the management of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
The defunct Batgirl movie could now have shared all the secrets and behind-the-scenes images that fans are going to be given, but with very few official images having been released it may turn out that there are still more to come.
