There’s no villain, real or fictional, with more wealth than Superman’s arch-nemesis. According to a study conducted by Payset, found Lex Luthor to be the richest villain of them all with an estimated net worth of $75 billion. This conclusion was made after calculating the value of assets and the change in the value of the dollar to arrive at dollar figures for the various names on a top 20 richest villains list.

“Lex Luthor is a slight change from most comic book villains, as he is a self-made billionaire businessman, inventor, scientist, and philanthropist who dedicated his talents to overcoming the god-like Superman,” the study says about the DC character, who was played by actors like Jesse Eisenberg and Jon Cryer in recent years. “You have to admire him for setting a high bar! Using his monopolization in aerospace, engineering, and political prowess, he dedicates his being to the downfall of Superman.”

The list also includes some of the wealthiest real-life criminals, showcasing where they stand compared to some of the villains and supervillains found in fiction. Pablo Escobar lands in the No. 2 spot behind Lex Luthor with a net worth of $64 billion. The infamous Colombian drug lord and Medellin Cartel leader, nicknamed the “king of cocaine,” is by far the wealthiest criminal in recorded history. After escaping from incarceration, Escobar was killed by police in 1993.

There are other real-life criminals in the list, from Al Capone to Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Meanwhile, a slew of fictional characters from movies and TV shows are also included, such as Norman Osborn, Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk, Michael Douglas’ Wall Street character Gordon Gekko, and Springfield Nuclear Power Plant operator C. Montgomery Burns.

Lex Luthor Is Number One

Perhaps crime does pay, at least until the police or a superhero comes into the fray to bring justice to these lawbreakers. But before dealing with Superman, Lex Luthor can be proud knowing he’s the richest supervillain on the planet, even when factoring in characters from different realities and universes.
