Obi-Wan Kenobi managed to satisfy many Star Wars fans, skimming the boarder between fan service and involved show very cleverly, holding off many of its fan-pleasing moments until the end of its run. One of these moments saw the return of Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn in a live action form for the first time in over 20 years. It seems that while this appearance brought the series to an almost perfect ending, for Neeson it was an emotional experience to be back in the franchise again with his former co-star Ewan McGregor.
Obi-Wan Kenobi premiered on Disney+ in May with a double episode that brought McGregor’s Jedi master back into the world of Star Wars at a time between Revenge of The Sith and A New Hope. The story unexpectedly revolved around Kenobi’s relationship with a young Leia Organa rather than Luke Skywalker as expected, and this meant that the series took some twists and turns on its way to the climactic battle between Kenobi and Darth Vader.

However, for many the small moments that came in the final act of the series that really ended the show on a high note. Almost as a coda to the story, the final shots saw Qui-Gon Jinn appearing to Kenobi as a Force Ghost, and leading him onto his next challenge. While appearing at the San Sebastián Film Festival recently, Neeson recalled his feeling about the reunion.

Like many actors who get themselves involved in a huge franchise like Star Wars, their time is never over unless they really want it to be. While Neeson’s involvement in the franchise could easily have ended with his character’s death in The Phantom Menace, Neeson returned to voice his character again in a few episodes of The Clone Wars and will do so again in the animated series Tales of the Jedi.
“It was Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan on a camel, a real camel, and me. We rehearsed it before we shot it, and we just started crying, and it was lovely. That Star Wars that we did, Phantom Menace, we shot it over 25 years ago. It came out in 1999.”
Whether he will be seen again in another live-action series or movie is something that is currently up in the air, and will likely be decided when the fate of a potential second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi is made clear. So far, there has been no word from Lucasfilm about whether Ewan McGregor will be reprising his iconic role again, but there is certainly the appetite from fans if it happens.
Although Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has previously said that the main Star Wars focus in future is going to be on big screen movies, for now the attention is all currently on Disney+ where Andor has just made a successful debut, and The Mandalorian’s third season is not too far away. While these shows will not bring back either McGregor or Neeson in any capacity, we can hope that they will both be back sometime in the near future.
