What Made The Exorcist So Successful
Warner Bros.
As we approach nearly half a century since its release, The Exorcist continues to be a cultural touchstone for the horror genre. The film shattered box office records and expectations upon its initial release in 1973, ultimately becoming the highest-grossing domestic horror film of all time with a worldwide gross of over $441 million.
Additionally, the movie was so much more than a financial success. Both at its release and decades later, the film’s impact can be seen in its critical recognition. Ellen Burstyn was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award for her role in the movie, and the film as a whole received an impressive ten Oscar nominations. The Exorcist’s historic Best Picture nomination was another of its most notable accomplishments. Until this nomination, no horror film had ever received an award in this category, marking a significant change in the horror film industry’s perception.
Peter Sattler is writing the new Exorcist screenplay, with contributions from Scott Teems, Danny McBride, and David Gordon Green. As part of Blumhouse’s production, Jason Blum will produce with Ryan Turek overseeing the project. David Robinson and James Robinson will produce for Morgan Creek. Executive producers include Green, McBride, and Couper Samuelson.
