Buzz Lightyear and his crew put a plan together in the latest clip from the upcoming Pixar outing, Lightyear. Starring Marvel actor Chris Evans as the title character, the footage has been released on social media courtesy of Discussing Film, and teases the old-school sci-fi adventure film that will undoubtedly endear and captivate audiences when it lands later this month.

Produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, Lightyear will act as both a Toy Story spinoff and an in-universe movie. The story revolves around the origin of the fictional Buzz Lightyear, the character who inspired the popular action figure in the Toy Story franchise. Lightyear follows Buzz as he prepares to embark on his first test flight to explore new galaxies for Star Command. Marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth, alongside his commander and their crew, Buzz must try to find a way back home through space and time. Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda. Buzz might just be the only hope to stop him and save the galaxy.

Directed by Angus MacLane, Lightyear stars Captain America himself, Chris Evans, as the voice of the title character. The Pixar outing will also boast a stellar supporting cast alongside the Marvel actor and includes Keke Palmer as Izzy Hawthorne, Dale Soules as Steel, Taika Waititi as Morrison, Peter Sohn as Sox, Uzo Aduba as Alicia Hawthorne, Mary McDonald-Lewis as Qurinside, Efren Ramirez as Diaz, Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Commander Burnside, and James Brolin as Emperor Zurg.

Pixar Will Get Meta with Lightyear

Lightyear will see Pixar take a somewhat meta-approach to the world of Toy Story, with the movie being a Buzz Lightyear outing that would have been viewed by Andy. So, to make it easier, just imagine that you are Andy when watching Lightyear. This approach is an interesting one and one that could open up a whole new world for Pixar in terms of potential Toy Story spinoffs.

Lightyear director Angus MacLane has (at least attempted) to explain how the movie fits into the Pixar universe saying, “‘Set in the world of Toy Story’ is kind of weird. Another way to get at it, it’s a straightforward sci-fi action film about the Buzz Lightyear character. In the Toy Story universe, it would be like a movie that maybe Andy would have seen, that would have made him want a Buzz Lightyear figure.”

To differentiate it further from the plastic version of Buzz, Lightyear will not bring back Tim Allen to voice the character. Instead, Chris Evans will provide the vocals of the Space Ranger, with MacLane explaining why this is necessary, and why the MCU star was the right choice. “We needed a new voice for Buzz. He needed to have a nice, rich sound, able to be both dramatic and comedic - and most importantly, he needed to be heroic without coming off as arrogant or dense,” the filmmaker said. “That’s a tall order, and we immediately knew we had to ask Chris.”

Lightyear is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on June 17, 2022.
