As reported by Buzzfeed News, star Lily Allen has been making headlines this week for her take on Vulture’s viral article on nepotism. The piece in question focuses on the shocking amount of successful celebrities in the entertainment world who have famous parents. The article blew up on Twitter, and eventually, Allen decided to offer up her take on the matter. It’s worth noting that the British pop singer also fits into the category of celebrities with famous parents, as Allen is the daughter of Trainspotting actor Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen.
While Allen acknowledged that she’d experienced privilege, she also claimed that her parent’s fame negatively impacted her childhood. On Twitter, Allen wrote, “In childhood we crave stability and love, nurturing, we don’t care about money or proximity to power yet. Many of the nepo babies are starved of these basic things in childhood as their parents are probably narcissistic.” She continued, “And entertainment business is not parent friendly eg.. Touring/ months away shooting. It can be hard to see one’s own privilege when you’re still processing childhood trauma, and a lot of these kids haven’t figured that out yet.”

The singer said she agreed that her “privileged upbringing” had “created so many opportunities.” Still, she added that she’d been much more defensive about her parents back when she was in her early twenties. Allen said, “I felt like I worked extremely hard and that I deserved the success that I had.” Allen went on to say, “People connected to my songs and that the songs came from me, I also had quite a fraught relationship with some of my family members so it felt difficult for me to attribute my successes to them, at the time. But we all know it’s more complicated than that.”
Allen then noted that she believes “nepo babies are being somewhat scapegoated” and added that there needs to be more focus on “wealth inequality, about lack of programs and funding.” She finished out by saying that she isn’t “rooting for an industry full of people that had childhoods that looked like mine,” adding that “nepo babies have feelings.”

Lily Allen Almost Played Theon Greyjoy’s (Played by Her Real-Life Brother, Alfie Allen) Sister on Game of Thrones

However, Allen’s public stance on nepotism has reminded some people of the singer’s previous statement regarding one of her other famous relatives, her brother, Alfie Allen. Previously during a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) in 2014, the singer revealed that she’d been offered the role of Theon Greyjoy’s (played by her brother, Alfie) sister on Game of Thrones but turned down the part due to an incest storyline that she didn’t want to act out with her sibling.
The singer said, “I’ve been asked to do a Game of Thrones cameo, they asked me if I’d be interested in playing Theon’s sister, and I felt uncomfortable because I would have had to go on a horse and he would have touched me up and s***.”
Since her response on nepotism, Twitter users have brought up Allen’s prior statement regarding a role on GoT and pointed out that it’s a prime example of how the entertainment industry favors nepotism, even when it’s clearly inappropriate to do so.
One user said, “I have just remembered the time Lily Allen was asked to play Theon’s sister in GoT (played by her real-life brother) whose character is meant to grope her. Nepotism is sometimes bad.”
Another said, “This is hilarious because Lily Allen is a singer and was offered the role of Yara Greyjoy on Game of Thrones. The only reason she turned it down was because her real-life brother Alfie played Theon Greyjoy.”
Additionally, Buzzfeed noted that Allen’s brother later denied his sister’s claims and insisted that Gemma Whelan (the actor who ultimately played Yara) was always Game of Thrones’ first choice for the role.
