TV star Tom Bosley passed away earlier today in his Palm Springs, California home after a brief battle with lung cancer. Earlier reports indicate that the actor was also suffering from a staph infection. Bosley was best known to television audiences as patriarch Howard Cunningham on the long-running ABC sitcom Happy Days, which aired from 1974 until 1984. Four-time Tony Award-winning actor Harvey Fierstein (Hairspray, Torch Song Trilogy, Mrs. Doubtfire) has joined the cast of NBC’s The Year Without a Santa Claus, which stars John Goodman, Delta Burke, Chris Kattan, Ethan Suplee, Michael McKean Eddie Griffin and Carol Kane. The two-hour movie, based on the 1974 Rankin-Bass perennial that featured stop-motion animation, will air during the upcoming 2006 holiday season. Fierstein will play Heatmiser, replacing the previously announced Chris Elliott, who had to bow out due to a scheduling conflict....

Marvel Studios has tapped Mad Men writer Jonathan Igla for their upcoming Hawkeye TV show. The studio is currently developing the new Disney+ series, which will star Jeremy Renner. In addition to writing, Igla will also serve as an executive producer on the series, much like he did with the hit AMC show. The Hawkeye show was first teased earlier this year, but Renner played coy when asked about it. However, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige formally announced the Hawkeye series at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, after months of speculation....

Once HBO had a little taste of blood, it appears they want more. According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO has picked up a second season of Alan Ball’s True Blood after just two episodes have aired. While the series debuted modestly on the pay-cable network, the series’ second episode posted an “unprecedented” ratings increase of 24% from the debut. “We are absolutely thrilled that the critics and our viewers have embraced True Blood,” said Michael Lombardo, president of programming group and West Coast operations at HBO....

Man of Steel star Henry Cavill continues to discuss his Superman return, with the actor now revealing what his goals are for the character going forward. Speaking with Screen Rant, Cavill declared that he wants audiences to “feel like they can fly” when they leave the theater and teases a much more hopeful, inspirational version of the character than he has portrayed before. Multi-award-winning crime drama series Luther will be returning to BBC One. The new four-part series written by Neil Cross and starring Idris Elba, who has received a Golden Globe and SAG Award for his performance in the role of John Luther, will start filming early next year.
