Oscar-nominated director Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules) has signed on to direct a Swedish adaptation of best selling crime novel The Hypnotist by Lars Kepler, reports The Hollywood Reporter. This is the first Swedish film in 24 years that Lasse Hallström will direct, and is the first in a planned franchise based on Lars Kepler’s Detective Joona Linna series, which are most successful Swedish crime novels worldwide after Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy....

Shudder, AMC Networks’ premiere streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, has announced the acquisition of Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist from award-winning documentarian Alexandre O. Philippe, which will be released exclusively on the streaming platform on November 19th, 2020 in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The film, which had its world premiere at the 2019 Venice International Film Festival and was an official selection of the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, will also stream this weekend as part of the Nightstream Film Festival....

The critically-acclaimed drama Get Low will be released on both Blu-ray and DVD on February 22. The standard DVD will be priced at $28.95 SRP and the BD will cost $38.96 SRP. According to Variety, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures has acquired the film rights to Japanese vidgame Siren from SCE Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment’s worldwide game development studios for the PlayStation platforms. Michael Gordon has been hired to write the screenplay. He’ll work closely with “Siren” vidgame director Keiichiro Toyama. Ghost House’s Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert will produce with Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Doug Davison. Vertigo brought the project to Mandate Pictures prexy of motion pictures Nathan Kahane....

One of the biggest complaints fans have had of the MCU is the lackluster, one-dimensional villain template they repeatedly use in many of their movies and now Disney+ series, as outlined by Vox. Aside from Thanos, Killmonger, Loki, and the Scarlet Witch, many of Marvel’s villains are rather forgettable. This is especially true of many of the origin stories in the MCU: Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel, and Eternals, for example....

Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid stars Halle Bailey as the new Ariel. Directed by Rob Marshall, the feature film is the latest of Disney’s many remakes of classic animated films that have been getting churned out in recent years. Filming The Little Mermaid has been a lengthy process, in part due to covid-related delays, but the movie has since wrapped filming and is scheduled to hit theaters in May 2023....

You can bring the latest adventure from your favorite wizard on DVD and Blu-ray this December. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on December 8. Hustle is Adam Sandler’s newest project in Happy Madison’s longstanding partnership with Netflix. But don’t expect this movie to be another one in Sandler’s well-known comedic archives. Like Uncut Gems, Hustle promises to err on the more dramatic side of Sandler’s (finally) maturing selection of characters. Apparently, the screenplay truly inspired Sandler. The star said he could relate a lot to the themes of “working hard his whole life and not getting exactly what [the character’s] goal was” and subjects of struggling to achieve a particular goal....

There are many who would say that Inglourious Basterds may be Quentin Tarantino’s best film of his career. Judging by the final line of the film, one could argue that Tarantino himself agrees. The opening scene alone, consisting of Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) and Perrier LaPadite (Denis Ménochet) discussing the missing Dreyfuses, has some of the best dialogue written for the screen. It takes a writer of sheer talent to make a scene of two people talking exciting from beginning to end....

Frankie Muniz is poking fun at the excessive number of TV show reboots by teasing the return of the classic comedy series Malcolm in the Middle. To be clear, there are no official plans to revive the series, though it’s starting to appear Muniz would be on board if such a project were to come to fruition. “All these reboots of dumb ass TV shows, yet we still have no idea what Malcolm is up to,” Muniz writes in a recent tweet....

The 2022 Oscars put on quite the performance, with Will Smith and Chris Rock stealing the show with a moment that will go down in Oscars history. Until now, Jada Pinkett Smith has been mostly silent on the matter. However, she finally addressed the slap during her Red Table Talk on Wednesday. It seems Smith wants to put the action at the Academy Awards behind her and focus on the message she wants to send about alopecia....

The Hangover Part II’s Jamie Chung will star opposite Rob Lowe in the indie political drama Knife Fight, with Julie Bowen, Connie Britton, Jennifer Morrison, Rebecca Mader and Titus Welliver also in negotiations to join. Rob Lowe stars as a political crisis manager who specializes in playing hardball on behalf of scandal-plagued clients. Jamie Chung will play his assistant, who already has a savvy sense of how to spin a negative story....

Variety reports that The Walt Disney Co. has recruited The Day After Tomorrow scribe Jeffrey Nachmanoff to pen three projects at the studio, including two for studio-based Jerry Bruckheimer Films. Nachmanoff is doing scripting overhauls on Bruckheimer’s adaptation of the Ubisoft vidgame Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Unnatural History as well as the LivePlanet-produced Liberty. Prince of Persia tells the story of an adventurous prince who uncovers a dangerous artifact in a remote mountain kingdom and, with the help of an enemy princess, must stop a despot from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy all mankind....

The cult favorite Death Race 2000 just got classed up a bit. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joan Allen, Ian McShane, and Tyrese Gibson have all joined the cast of Paul W.S. Anderson’s remake entitled, simply, Death Race. Jason Statham is the star of this super charged smash-em-up, which revolves around a race where points are tallied by how many pedestrians you kill. Statham is playing a prisoner who is forced behind the wheel of a terrifying death machine....

Let’s welcome John Mulaney into the Saturday Night Live Five-Timers Club. As longtime viewers of NBC’s sketch comedy series will know, the Five-Timers Club is made up of those who’ve hosted the show at least five times. On Saturday Night, Mulaney guested hosted for his fifth time, officially putting him into the club. Of course, SNL used the opportunity to bring back several big names that are also part of the club to welcome Mulaney into the fold....

Lionsgate has surprised us with a new teaser for John Wick: Chapter 4, and with it comes the reveal that the sequel has gotten a major delay. Previously set to be released alongside The Matrix Resurrections in May, John Wick 4 was pushed back to May 2022. A fun teaser released online by the studio brings about the news that the film has gotten yet another delay, putting fans on the wait for almost another year....

When Jon Bernthal was announced as Frank Castle/The Punisher in Netflix’s Daredevil season 2, no one envisioned that Bernthal’s explosive performance would go down as one of the best in television history. Initially, there were no further plans for the character, but Jon Bernthal’s compelling portrayal of one of Marvel’s oldest and greatest antiheroes forced the makers to reconsider. Eventually, Bernthal reprised the role in Netflix’s The Punisher, which ran for two seasons from 2017 to 2019 before being abruptly canceled....
